Looking for something new to do on Oahu, or on another island? Why not check out a roller derby bout?
Roller derby bouts take place on a flat track where two teams composed of five women (3 blockers, 1 pivot, and 1 jammer) circle around in attempt to get their respective jammers to score as many points possible in a two minute jam. 1 point is scored for every person on an opposing team that a jammer passes. Pushing, shoving and blocking; without the use of forearms or hands and nothing below the mid thigh, make for exciting and high impact entertainment. The use of racy names, sassy costumes and taunting, along with the adrenaline and the encouragement from the crowd that fills the air each time someone hits the ground or when jammers make multiple laps scoring lots of points in one jam, adds to that excitement.
Roller Derby in Hawaii picked up in 2008. Currently there are multiple teams on several islands, as well as an All Star team comprised of ladies from Maui and Oahu who travel to the mainland to compete against other teams. The popularity of the sport is picking up, and many women say that it gives them a chance to do something new, meet new people, and get more involved with their communities.
