Nelson delivers

Freshman Ashley Nelson is quickly becoming a force on the mound as she played a key role  in the University of Hawaii at Hilo sweeping Cal State Stanislaus on the UH Hilo Softball Field.

The southpaw tossed a complete-game for a 2-1 win in the first game. She entered game two with the tying run at the plate to preserve the Vulcans' 4-1 victory.

“I was confident in what I was throwing and my team had my back on defense,” said Nelson. “In the last inning of the first game when Angie caught that line drive that really saved us. It was a real big play.”

With no outs in the seventh, CSUS' Vanessa Del Toro roped a shot to left center field. Angeline Cruz got on her horse and ran down the line drive to prevent the potential double and score tying runner from reaching base.

Nelson finished the game with a 1-run, 3-hitter while striking out six and walking none.

Aisha Sueda went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI including a double and home run.

The Vulcans (3-1) sat on a 4-1 lead entering the final frame of game two.  After two quick outs and consecutive walks, Nelson's one-pitch relief performance resulted in a game ending pop fly.

Amber Waracka picked up first win of the season with a 5-hit, 6-strikeout performance.
