Kaneohe, HI (September 15, 2012) – The Hawai’i Pacific (2-3, 1-0) women’s soccer team opened up PacWest play with a 3-0 victory against the University of Hawaii at Hilo (2-2, 0-1). Mehgan Fuller scored two goals off passes from Kaua Wall and Sanoe Souza added a penalty kick for the Sea Warriors who move to 1-0 in PacWest play.
Early on in the match Sea Warrior coach Gina Brewer implored her offensive weapons to be more “dynamic” and it did not take long for them to answer. In the 5th minute Andrea Aguirre drove the end line finding an open KaUa Wall who unselfishly centered the ball to Fuller who deposited the ball in to the net to make it 1-0. HPU would take the one goal lead to the half while enjoying a seven to one advantage in shots.
After several near misses, Wall again found Fuller for a score on a beautiful through ball that left Fuller one-on-one to beat Vulcan keeper Breegan Saller making it 2-0. Souza would extend the Sea Warrior lead in the 77th minute on penalty kick making the score 3-0. The match would end with HPU owning the advantage in shots 15 to four.
After the game coach Brewer spoke about the progress of her team, “I am excited about our first PacWest win. The girls have been working hard to be more dangerous on the attack and today things started to come together nicely.” Already looking forward, coach Brewer discussed the next steps for her team to improve, “We have to focus on a few things on both offense and defense this week to make sure we are prepared for our next game against a tough BYU-H team.”
Hawaii Pacific will continue PacWest play on September 20th against BYU-Hawaii in Laie, HI, game time is scheduled for 3 PM.
