Track & Field To Host Third Sunset Series Meet
Clarence T.C. Ching Field

Schedule of Events

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team will host the Terry Albritton Memorial, Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field. The meet is part of the five-event all-comer Sunset Series that the Rainbow Wahine will host during the indoor and outdoor seasons in preparation for mainland competition.

The field events begin at 2:00 p.m. and track events at 4:00 p.m.

The meet is named after the late UH track star who broke the world record in the shot put (71 feet, 8 1/2 inches) at an all-comers meet at Cooke Field while a junior at UH in 1976. Later that year, he won the NCAA title. Albritton enrolled in Stanford in 1973 on a football scholarship and also competed in track, where he was second in the shot put in the Pac-8 in 1974. He transferred to Hawai'i in 1975 and was the NCAA runner-up that year.

When UH dropped the men's track and field program after his world record breaking season, he transferred back to Stanford, where he won the 1977 NCAA shot put title. Following his competitive career, Albritton served as strength coach at UH from 1979-85, and is regarded as a pioneer in plyometrics and other fast-twitch muscle training techniques. Albritton died in Cambodia in 2004 at the age of 50.

Albritton was inducted into the school's Sports Circle of Honor as part of the Class of 2009.

For those interested in competing, entries are to be completed on the day of the competition and will be allowed up to 30 minutes before each event. Registration will be open 45 minutes before the first scheduled field event and close 30 minutes prior to the last event of the meet.

Entry fee into all of the Sunset Meet Series will be by a $3.00 donation. University of Hawai'i students may participate at no cost with proof of a validated UH student ID. All groups (schools/clubs) can negotiate a group fee with the meet director.

Other Sunset Series meets include Sunset Meet #4 (April 14) and Sunset Meet #5 (April 28).
